Episode 18: Television

As themes go this is a rich vein to tap. But the intention as always isn’t just to find a load of television theme tunes and slap them together in a nostalgic mass and call it done (otherwise I’d just play the theme tune from Cheers on loop for an hour) - it’s the usual case of looking at this huge array of incredible music that I love and trying to work out what characteristics they have that allow them to be grouped together in a particular way. If there’s a chance to be a little obtuse that’s great but I’m not above whacking in a piece of theme music if it’s the right choice for the podcast - see: theme from ‘Stranger Things’ as exhibit A.

Where it gets interesting for me is when a relatively arbitrary collection of music starts to tell its own story. Or when musical threads (read: characteristics) start to reveal themselves as elements that reoccur throughout the episodes. A number of examples in this episode speak to previous threads: the aquatic sounds of ‘Robinson Crusoe’ or the lo-fi tape hiss drenched sounds of ‘Art Vandelay’. And there’s also a strong dose of humour in this episode. That is something that crops up time and time again, completely of its own volition, and will be the subject of its own episode in the nearish future.

As mentioned in the episode itself, there’s a bit less intra-episode chat from me this time around. And this is simply because whilst pulling it all together musically I really couldn’t find an appropriate moment to recap the tracklisting in the second half of the episode. I felt that it wouldn’t be in the interests of the music being played to start chatting and so, simply, I chose not to. The music is the star here, always has been. And so in this case, I very much felt that less was more.

This is the last themed episode of 2018. There are two instalments left in this calendar year: 13th and 27th December, and the plan is for these to be sort of Music of 2018 affairs. There’s time for that to change, of course, but that’s the loose plan as I sit here today.

Hope you dig it.

Cheers,

R

Episode 17: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy

I am overjoyed to say that I got a chance to sit down with Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy who was kind enough to give me an hour or so of her time for the podcast. For those that don’t know, Colleen is a DJ, producer, broadcaster, journalist, label-owner, audiophile and the driving force behind Classic Album Sundays which offers a space to listen to classic albums on vinyl on a world-class soundsystem that, I can attest first-hand, offers a depth of audio fidelity I have never experienced before. Classic Album Sundays has grown since its relatively humble beginnings in London in 2010 into a global listening party operating on multiple continents. The scope of guests and experts that have contributed to the Classic Album Sunday project is staggering with the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Gilles Peterson, The Orb, Paloma Faith, Nick Mason and dozens more all taking part. Head to classicalbumsundays.com for more info, archives of previous events and listings for upcoming projects.

I spoke to Colleen back in September 2018 at her East London home, sitting amongst her thousands of vinyl records and sipping coffee kindly made by her husband Adam who himself is a DJ with Trojan Sound System. It was a real honour to be able to talk to someone who I had such respect for beforehand and even more so after when you hear just how entrenched in music she has been for pretty much her entire life. She was as open, engaging and forthcoming a guest as I could possibly have hoped for and this chat is littered with wonderful stories, musings and beautiful sentiments.

She says she sees her role as ‘a curator and an educator’, so prepare for school.

Cheers,

Episode 16: Letters

When I think about future episodes of Threadwork I’ve kind of conditioned myself to think about the music I want to play in the context of themes. On one hand I really like it, especially when I manage to work out a neat little connection or two between what is being played AND I manage to get that connection to work from an audio (read: mix) perspective. It’s pleasing, doubly so when it’s something that just happens naturally. But as much as I really like some of the more conceptual ones (episode 7 is a particular favourite) I never really thought that 16 episodes in I’d still be doing that. I suppose I thought by now I’d have sufficient faith in my abilities to consider all of the music I’m into and have at my disposal to pull together an hour’s worth of records that would hang together nicely. And that that hour would have sufficient variety musically so as to be interesting to those listeners with different tastes, versus, say an hour of house or electronica or indie, etc. There’s nothing wrong with any of that, by the way, I just feel that unless there’s a particular itch to scratch musically then I’d like to keep the tracklisting relatively varied. To paraphrase the influential Scroobius Pip, (any given record played) may not be for you and that’s fine. Which is to say that it’s absolutely cool not to like all of the music on every episode but hopefully there’s more that you do like than don’t. Of course, if you do like every record played you’ve clearly got impeccable taste…

I will, eventually, lose the ‘theme’ dependency, but I think I’ll need to be a bit more ahead of the game than I am before I do. I’d need the breathing room to be able to consider whether a ‘random’ selection of music, as good as I believe it to be, hangs together sufficiently. And at the moment, hitting the schedule of an episode every fortnight is a little hand to mouth, as it were. It’s hard work. The most fun kind of hard work there is. But hard work nonetheless.

Anyway, this instalment uses letters as its theme. Be that initials in the names of artists, abbreviations as track titles or references in the music itself - let the Latin-derived English alphabet act as the framework for your musical enjoyment.

Cheers,

R

Episode 15: Women's Names

This instalment of Threadwork has been ready for months (well, the music has anyway) but for various reasons the time was never quite right to release it. This was mainly because this was one of the first episodes we (Producer Bod and I) recorded and finished and when we tried to work out where it best sat it kept on being pushed back because there was a little too much crossover of the artists included on this episode compared to episodes that had just been released.

Anyway, that was then and this is now. And as you can see, the theme is Women’s Names. Or, more accurately, names that are usually given to women. Sometimes it’s hard to know what the right words to use are… thankfully it’s a bit easier to choose the records.

Episode 14: Non-English Language Part 2

Here is the second of two instalments using Non-English Language as its theme. There’s just as much variation in the music selected as in the first part that ranges from weirdy late-60s Brazilian cuts to big sounding production from French producers to stately ambient sounds and a number of African cuts from all over the continent. There’s further connective tissue besides and Producer Bod and I are really happy with the results. Hopefully you’ll dig it too.

Episode 13: Non-English Language Part 1

I can trace back my love of other languages in music really easily. It’s all to do with the album ‘Graceland’ by Paul Simon from 1986. This album got played heavily when I was a kid and introduced me as a 6/7 year old overtly to African instrumentation and other languages or more accurately, non-English languages. Clearly it was distilled through the filter of Western music but that’s fine, I reckon. It was the epitome of a gateway drug and all that really meant was that music with other instrumentation or that was sung in a language other than that which I understood was fair game. I had a context to it and that was all I needed.

Skip forward 30+ years and I continue to love music with lyrics I can’t understand (and, of course, the actual construct of the instrumentation and arrangement itself). In fact, I’ll go one step further and say that there’s a freedom incomprehension brings - I don’t need to worry about the lyrics being not very good if I can’t understand them. Although there’s always the fear that I’m supporting messages I don’t agree with… Ignorance truly appears to be bliss in this case…

A word on some of the music included in this episode. It’s not supposed to be exhaustive. It’s not a tick list of languages or countries. There’s no bias other than it’s music that I love and that flows in a way I feel is enjoyable to listen to and is interesting and even challenging at times. And, as always, a degree of creative licence runs through it - it’s music that is predominantly in languages other than English. You’ll see what I mean, I’m sure.

This is part 1 of 2 so far.

Cheers,

R

Episode 12 - Threadwork: The Life Aquatic

I’ve often thought that I have a predilection to aquatic sounds and overtones in music. There were loads of other records I had on the longlist for this episode – so a part two may well be on the cards at one point – but there’s something about water that’s very evocative in music. And then there are aquatic sounds – or compositions that feel watery. But what does that mean? Well, I know I’ve played a couple of his records on previous episodes and spoken a little about them but someone like Ross From Friends manages to capture a kind of submerged, bubbling, shifting feel on some of his compositions and, to me, they often end up conjuring an image as well as, obviously, providing the soundtrack. It may seem like a strange touchpoint but when I think about it, Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ from the early 90s is an example of a track that feels watery. What I am keenly aware of is that ‘Wicked Game’ had an iconic video – especially for a young boy, phew – that was shot on a beach with the sea rolling away in the background. So is that the reason why I associate slightly reverby guitars and roomy production with an underwater sound and so anything that is left or right of arc of that gets tarred liberally with a watery brush? Maybe. But I’m not sure. It does sound aquatic though, doesn’t it? It shifts and slides and ebbs and flows… I can only speak from my perspective and whether others get a watery feel from it is up to them to say. But for me if there’s a dash of ‘Wicked Game’ in a piece of music then I’ll be on the shore of it, gazing out to the horizon.

Despite me talking about it a lot above, 'Wicked Game' isn't included in the episode itself. So here it is below. What a tune.

Cheers,

R

Episode 11 - Threadwork: From The Vaults: Glimpse (2002)

I've been tidying up the house recently and desperately trying to get rid of STUFF but whilst going through the STUFF I found a load of CDs in one of those massive CD wallets. And it just so happened to contain a load of old mixes I put together in the early/mid-2000s. Very few had a tracklisting and I only vaguely remember actually recording a couple of them but there they were nonetheless. Anyway, I popped a couple on and was surprised at how... well, Threadworky they were. That's either a good thing in that I remain consistent in my approach to compiling mixes (and Threadwork is among many other things a bit of an excuse to have a mix) or a less good thing in that I haven't developed at all in years.

Anyway, I take Threadwork seriously and I wouldn't just put up any old rubbish and call it an episode. And given there isn't a single track on here that I wouldn't include in any other instalment I was compiling today I thought I would post this up as a release.

It'll be good to get your thoughts.

Cheers,

R

Episode 10 - Threadwork: Bugs & Flowers

Here's instalment 10 of Threadwork and this fortnight's theme is Bugs & Flowers. I've mentioned elsewhere that some of the tracks don't exactly fit the description but they're near enough, I reckon.

There's a decent spread of music in this episode genre-wise: jazz, ambient, grunge, alternative, hard rock, electronica, house and more besides all feature and there's an accidental abundance of pianos across most of these styles which was a pleasant surprise.

Also this is the track that gave its name to the episode but that I couldn't quite fit in to the podcast in a way I was happy with. So for bonus listening check out this beautiful record by Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard.

Cheers,

Episode 9 Bonus: Eden Blackman Full Conversation

Here's the first bonus Threadwork episode and it's the full, unedited conversation with Eden Blackman. It's a must listen for anyone with an interest in Eden's career in the music industry and contains a couple of excellent stories that didn't make it into the episode proper.

Cheers,
