Episode 32: Music Of 2019 Part 2

December 26, 2019

For the 31st and 32nd instalments of the podcast I look back on the year that was and pull together two episodes of some of my most loved and most listened to pieces of music released in 2019.

There’s an unofficial subtitle to the two episodes and that is 'Women & Weirdness’ because much of the music was made by women and much of it is a bit weird. Sometimes it’s both at the same time. I don’t think this means much but I can’t help but feel there’s some kind of reason, maybe many, that most of the albums I’ve bought and loved this year were made by women - Rozi Plain, Aldous Harding, Salami Rose Joe Louis, Pixx, Jessica Pratt, Little Simz and more besides. But contrast that to individual tracks and singles and it’s a different story.

What’s also noticeable (for me) is how relatively unplugged I am from underground electronic music these days and that’s definitely something I want to rectify in the new year. The simple reason is that it takes time to find that stuff - especially really good stuff - and time is not something that I have an abundance of. There have been a number of discoveries that haven’t made it into the episodes either for stylistic / sequencing reasons or that the release date has been out by a year or so. So it’s not a lost cause - but when I think back to when I used to work in record shops (a poor example for obvious reasons) then it’s something I’m aware of and I do miss being a bit more involved in that scene.

Anyway, I really hope you enjoy these two episodes. They are a good representation of the music I’ve been digging this year. There are two heart-breaking omissions though and so I’ve linked to them below. One was Pixx’s ‘Andean Condor’ which, no joke, is one of my tunes of the year but I simply couldn’t get it into either episode in a way I was happy with. And the other is Avey Tare’s ‘Saturdays (Again)’ which only makes its way in in the guise of a looped few seconds but is a far better piece of music than how it was used. Check ‘em both out below…

Episode 30: Food & Drink

For the 30th instalment of the podcast I use the theme of Food & Drink to pull the music together - meaning all the records have some kind of relationship to food, drink or things that surround those topics.

As a developing episode this was one that started ‘not right’ and then came together relatively quickly to become something that Producer Bod and I are really happy with. This seems to be a situation that is happening a little more often these days - but it stands to reason as I firmly believe that it’s easier to start with SOMETHING and then pull it apart than start with nothing. Although in reality I’m always starting with something because I have records that I’ve usually spent a while collating and they’re all good to start with - so really it’s a case of trying to get something edible (as it were) from the quality ingredients.

Musically there’s the usual mix of alternative guitar-based stuff (I find it hard to think of different terminology and that seems to work as a broad catch-all) and more electronic sounds that range from electronic weirdness to straight up deep house supremacy and Detroit via The Netherlands genius. And then of course there’s the space where both of those collide…

Episode 29: Film

For episode 29 I make use of the theme of film to put some order to the chaos of the tracklisting. Initially it was titled movies but that wasn’t pretentious enough so I went with film. I could’ve gone even further and called it cinema but decided against it at the last. Mostly because it’d be nice to able to look at myself in the mirror without an unacceptable amount of self-loathing.

All joking aside, films, movies, flicks, cinema, etc is a wonderfully rich vein to mine but as always it’s not really a case of trying to fit the music to the theme - it was a case of finding a framework to pull these records together within. That’s the way the themes for episodes always work: I have all this great music but just need a way to whittle a long list down to a short list of 30ish tunes before then getting them into something that resembles an episode. This one has been bubbling away for a while. The first stab I had at it was, frankly, an absolute pig so I put it down, did something else for a few months until the shame subsided then had another go.

It’s not all music from films - some of the links are a little more obtuse - but in my humble opinion the music is truly exceptional and I’m really pleased how this one turned out in the end. Hope you like it too.
