Episode 16: Letters
When I think about future episodes of Threadwork I’ve kind of conditioned myself to think about the music I want to play in the context of themes. On one hand I really like it, especially when I manage to work out a neat little connection or two between what is being played AND I manage to get that connection to work from an audio (read: mix) perspective. It’s pleasing, doubly so when it’s something that just happens naturally. But as much as I really like some of the more conceptual ones (episode 7 is a particular favourite) I never really thought that 16 episodes in I’d still be doing that. I suppose I thought by now I’d have sufficient faith in my abilities to consider all of the music I’m into and have at my disposal to pull together an hour’s worth of records that would hang together nicely. And that that hour would have sufficient variety musically so as to be interesting to those listeners with different tastes, versus, say an hour of house or electronica or indie, etc. There’s nothing wrong with any of that, by the way, I just feel that unless there’s a particular itch to scratch musically then I’d like to keep the tracklisting relatively varied. To paraphrase the influential Scroobius Pip, (any given record played) may not be for you and that’s fine. Which is to say that it’s absolutely cool not to like all of the music on every episode but hopefully there’s more that you do like than don’t. Of course, if you do like every record played you’ve clearly got impeccable taste…
I will, eventually, lose the ‘theme’ dependency, but I think I’ll need to be a bit more ahead of the game than I am before I do. I’d need the breathing room to be able to consider whether a ‘random’ selection of music, as good as I believe it to be, hangs together sufficiently. And at the moment, hitting the schedule of an episode every fortnight is a little hand to mouth, as it were. It’s hard work. The most fun kind of hard work there is. But hard work nonetheless.
Anyway, this instalment uses letters as its theme. Be that initials in the names of artists, abbreviations as track titles or references in the music itself - let the Latin-derived English alphabet act as the framework for your musical enjoyment.
